Type 2 Diabetes and Bone Quality

Location trial

  • Gender Female
  • Age from 50 up to and including 80

Study Description:

We are working on a research study about the effects of type 2 diabetes on bone strength.    As people get older, their bones can become weak and break.  Type 2 diabetes may also make bones weak.  Our research team thinks that older people with and without diabetes have differences inside of their bones that make the bone strong versus weak.

This research study will measure how the structure of bone and how the bone rebuilds itself are different in women without diabetes, with pre-diabetes and with type 2 diabetes that requires insulin.  We will make these measurements using bone samples and blood donated from research study participants.  Information from this research study will help us to understand how bones break in people with and without diabetes.

We are enrolling post-menopausal women with and without type 2 diabetes for this 2-month research study.  After initial phone screening, you will come to Johns Hopkins Bayview for additional evaluation.  If you qualify for the research study and would like to participate, you would come to Johns Hopkins Bayview three more times for a total of four research study visits.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for this study, you must be a post-menopausal woman between 50-80 years-old and not taking estrogen or other medications that affect bone like Fosamax, Boniva or Actonel.  You can be on medications for diabetes.
